Historical Sew Fortnightly Challenge #1

For this challenge I didn't want to buy suspenders, so I made do with stash stuff!

Historical Sew Fortnightly: Challenge 8

I'm so behind! I'm trying to catch up, though, and I'll be working on going back and making up the last few challenges.

The Challenge:Seaside Inspiration

Fabric: 4 yds Sateen

Pattern: TV 201

Year: 1872

Notions: Thread, 2 hooks and eyes, 5 yards pleated trim

How historically accurate is it? Pretty good. Not sure about the historical correctness of trim placement.

Hours to complete: 8

First worn: ?

Total cost: $30 in fabric, $20 in trim, scrap muslin for hem and waistband.

Historical Sew Fortnightly: Challenge 4

The Challenge: Embellish

Fabric: Silk Ribbon

Pattern: No pattern, really, but I got the idea from a hat from Colonial Williamsburg and from This Blog Entry

Year: 1775

Notions: Thread

How historically accurate is it? About as accurate as I ever get.

Hours to complete: 1

First worn: ?

Total cost: $25 in silk ribbon, about $5 in dyes and $1 in tea and coffee to darken the ribbon, and a hat I've had laying around for years

Monday Progress Update: February 11th

Other than my Sew Fortnightly finished I didn't really get anything done this week other than half-cleaning my sewing room (which means it's now more of a disaster than when I started). Hope to finish that this week.

I did get a little work done on my Lantern Dress:

It's the corset layer. The underside is Kona cotton and flannel, channeled for boning. The over layer is a really neat brocade. So sad that there's not a lot of this, but it did inspire my color scheme! Hopefully I'll get to more of this after I clean.

Historical Sew Fortnightly: Challenge 3

The Challenge: Under it All

Fabric: Kona Cotton

Pattern: Self-made. It's a tube with a band the size of my underbust and straps. The bustle is two crescents I eyeballed.

Year: 1820

Notions: Cotton Twill Tape, Polyester Batting, Thread

How historically accurate is it? Except for the long seam it's all hand-sewn, and a hand buttonhole, so not bad there. The pattern I came up with but it looks like period examples. It should probably have self-fabric straps but I wanted fast. I've never seen a bustle sewn-in like this, but I wanted to eliminate a waist layer.

Historical Sew Fortnightly: Challenge 2

The Challenge: #2: UFO

Fabric: 8 yards Golden Tan Silk Taffeta Faille and 8 yards Rust Silk Taffeta

Pattern: TV 108, TV201, TV305, and TV400

Year: 1872

Notions: 15 yards 3/8" velvet ribbon, 15 yds pleated trim, 5 yds 1" velvet ribbon, 5 yds 2" velvet ribbon

How historically accurate is it?: I don't know about the trim, but the patterns and techniques are pretty accurate.

Hours to complete: Too Many. Probably around 120.

First worn: Arisia 2013

Total cost: $500

Next week is more underwear, I'm conflicted between doing more petticoats and trying to bang out a set of stays, my old ones are too small.

Historical Sew Fortnightly: Challenge 1

Yet again at the last minute, I finished a regency recticule:

Fabric: Silk Faille, lined with polished cotton

Notions: Thread, ribbon

How historically accurate is it?: Dunno. Used a sewing machine, so not that. Historically accurate fabrics, but rayon ribbon.

Hours to complete: maybe 1. I took this one easy.

Total cost: all stash, so $0

I'm finishing my bustle dress next week, so to get a head start on that I wanted an easy challenge #1.

Historical Sew Fortnightly: Challenge 0

Just in under the wire I finished Challenge 0 of the Historical Sew Fortnightly! I made a petticoat for my Curtain Along dress:

Fabric: I used the curtain-along Felicity fabric. This is the yardage from JoAnn's in the indigo colorway.

Pattern: Koshka's 18th Century Petticoat Tutorial

Year: I'm aiming for 1785.

Notions: Thread, cotton stay tape.

How historically accurate is it? It's all cotton, but that's not bad for 1785. The fabric pattern is accurate-ish. I'm relying totally on Koshka for how accurate the pattern is. It's machine sewn on the seams, which isn't period but is necessary for the "quick" part of this challenge. The hem is hand-sewn accurately.

Hours to complete: 2. Really wasn't bad, even hemming.

First worn: Not yet! Hopefully I'll finish my Curtain-along dress by Costume Con.

Total cost: I got the fabric on sale for 17.49. I used about 2 1/2 yards so . . . $45. The thread and tape was from my shash, it was probably pennies.

Looking forward to starting Challenge 1 later this week!
